Swindon Town jumped back into the top two in League One with a 1-0 victory over Port Vale at the County Ground on Sunday.

Mark Cooper’s side had slipped out of the automatic promotion places after their loss to Doncaster Rovers last weekend, but Andy Williams’ 14th goal of the season was enough to send them back above Preston North End and MK Dons.

The striker met Nathan Byrne’s cross after 56 minutes and powered a header beyond Chris Neal to secure all three points for the hosts.

Preston missed the chance to go second as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Crewe Alexandra, Simon Grayson’s men needing a Jermaine Beckford strike seven minutes from time to rescue a point.

MK Dons started the day just a point behind leaders Bristol City but a surprise 3-0 defeat to Walsall sees them drop to fourth – two goals from Tom Bradshaw and a Darren Potter own goal sealing their fate at Stadium MK.

Bristol City will end 2014 at the top thanks to a 14th win of the season, goals from Aden Flint, Matt Smith and Scott Wagstaff firing them to a 3-1 victory away at Gillingham.

With only two of the bottom four playing on Sunday, it was Crewe who took advantage with their point against Preston, but Colchester United also picked up a goalless draw at Crawley Town.

Dean Saunders was unable to find a victory in his first game as interim Crawley boss, however the point ensures they climb out of the relegation places at the expense of Leyton Orient.

Fleetwood Town surged into the top half with a fourth away win of the campaign, Mark Roberts and Josh Morris sealing a 2-0 against Rochdale at Spotland.

There was also a victory for fifth-placed Bradford City as Billy Knott’s third goal of the season gave them a 1-0 over Notts County.

Coventry City and Chesterfield played out a goalless draw at the Ricoh Arena, while it also finished scoreless between Doncaster Rovers and Peterborough United.

Sheffield United’s clash with Scunthorpe United was postponed due to concerns over safety for spectators at Bramall Lane following snow in the city.
