Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski has rejected an offer from the club to extend his contract, which runs out in 2014.

The 23-year-old has established himself as a key player at BVB this season, netting 16 goals in 25 Bundesliga games.

His fine form of recent prompted speculation that he might leave for a bigger club, and Dortmund acted quickly to fend off interest by offering him a contact extension.

The player and his agent, however, were not impressed by Dortmund’s financial tender and have declined the initial proposal.

“We are disappointed with the offer. I’ve said this to the president (Dr. Reinhard Rauball),” agent Cezary Kucharski told Revier Sport.

“A player of this class should be among the highest-paid footballers at Dortmund. The club managers have pledged that Robert is a part of their future plans.”

With over two years left on his contract it is likely that negotiations will continue as the Bundesliga champions try to hold on to their leading goalscorer of this season.
