Beira-Mar climbed out of the relegation zone after earning a late 2-1 victory at Gil Vicente, while Maritimo also won.
The 1999 Portuguese Cup winners had the chance to move clear of the drop zone provisionally on Sunday and they did thanks to goals from Serginho and Javier Balboa.
Serginho opened the scoring in the 20th minute, netting his second goal in the space of a week after scoring against Arounca in cup action.
The score remained the same up until the 62nd minute before Claudio levelled proceedings from the penalty spot.
However, with only three minutes remaining in the encounter, Balboa restored the visitors lead, which ultimately turned out to be the match-winning goal.
Beira-Mar are a solitary point ahead of relegation-threatened Academica, who are set to host Sporting Braga on Monday.
Maritimo moved four points clear of danger with a routine 2-0 win against Nacional.
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, Fidelis and Sami both found the back of the net to extend Maritimo’s unbeaten streak to three games.
In other results on Sunday, Vitoria Guimaraes accounted for Olhanense 2-0, while Rio Ave and Pacos de Ferreira shared the spoils in a goalless draw.
