Lyon reclaimed top spot in Ligue 1 with a stunning 4-1 victory over Marseille at the Stade Velodrome on Wednesday evening.
Bafetimbi Gomis scored a magnificent hat-trick and put fellow title challengers Marseille back in their place with a resounding win away from home.
Gomis slotted his first from the penalty spot on three minutes and rounded a diving Souleymane Diawara after taking down Mouhamadou Dabo’s cross to make it 2-0 in the 34th minute.
The visitors continued to dominate proceedings even without the likes of Yoann Gourcuff, Lisandro Lopez, Jimmy Briand or Dejan Lovren.
It was more of the same after the interval with Steed Malbranque’s measured strike putting Lyon into a commanding 3-0 lead and they put the result beyond all doubt when Gomis completed his hat-trick 10 minutes from time.
Loic Remy netted a late consolation goal for Marseille but Rod Fanni then saw a straight red to compound a miserable night for Ellie Baup’s side.
Lyon move ahead of PSG, who are two points behind Baup’s side along with Marseille on 26 points.
