Ligue 1 Preview: PSG out to clinch title as relegation battle heats up

SoccerNews in Ligue 1 2 May 2013

Paris Saint-Germain can clinch their first league title since 1994 when they take on Valenciennes on Sunday.

The Ligue 1 leaders hold a nine-point lead over bitter rivals and nearest chasers Marseille and will secure the crown if they emerge victorious and the Stade Velodrome outfit fail to beat Bastia.

However, it is not just a big weekend at the top of the table, Troyes take on Evian in a massive clash at the bottom which could see the hosts, who sit bottom and six points adrift of safety, relegated if they lose to Pascal Dupraz’s side, who are just a point clear of the drop zone and are set to be without top scorer Saber Khelifa due to his dismissal following a post-match brawl in the defeat against PSG last weekend.
Reims and Ajaccio meet at the Stade Auguste Delaune, both sit four points clear of the bottom three, and the winner will be likely to be able to relax knowing their top-flight future will be virtually secured.
Nancy can also increase their chances of survival with a win on Sunday and, although they face a difficult task against third-placed Lyon, they will take heart from a run of just one defeat in their last eight and the fact they have already taken three points from Marseille earlier in the year.
Brest’s position in the top tier is looking perilous, they are five points adrift of safety following defeat to local rivals Rennes last Saturday and will be underdogs this weekend against Montpellier, who despite a recent streak of four defeats in their last six, still post one of the best home records in the league.
Sochaux are only inside the relegation zone on goal difference and will look to pull themselves away from trouble against Coupe de France semi-finalists Lorient.
Elsewhere the battle for European places is heating up with Saint-Etienne, who are chasing Lyon hard in the race for the final UEFA Champions League spot, facing Bordeaux on Friday, while Nice and Lille, two teams with top three ambitions of their own, travel to Rennes and Toulouse respectively.
