Ligue 1 preview: Tight title race nears break

Winter break bragging rights will be on the line ahead of this week’s Ligue 1, with each of PSG, Lyon and Marseille vying for top spot.

PSG are away to Brest on Friday and can sew up top spot at Christmas before the weekend’s fixtures if they pick up all three points.

Should Carlo Ancelotti’s men slip up though, Lyon or Marseille could take their place at the summit.

With both sides level with PSG on points, Lyon will welcome Nice on Saturday before Marseille are at home to Saint-Etienne on Sunday, and they will all be hoping to head into the New Year in the coveted top position.

PSG chief Sheikh Bin Abdul Rahman Al-Thani has been quoted as saying he would like Jose Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo at the club, which will no doubt raise the expectations on the shoulders of his star-studded side.

PSG have the wood on their upcoming opponents, too, winning three of their last four matches against Brest.

In action on Saturday, 11th-placed Lille are at home to Montpellier, and with the two sides locked on 26 points, a result either way would be an early Christmas present.

Ajaccio are at home to sixth-placed Rennes, and they will be hoping to move further away from the drop zone, which they sit just three points above through 18 games.

Red-hot Lorient – fourth in the league – will be hoping to make it five wins on the trot when they host relegation-threatened Reims.

Bordeaux have drawn their past four matches ahead of their home clash with 19th-placed Troyes, who are coming off the back of just their second win of the season.

Bottom club Nancy have drawn their past six but will be hoping to win their relegation six-pointer with Bastia, who sit in 16th.

On Sunday, Valenciennes will be out to break their run of two losses when they welcome Evian TG.

In the later kick-off, Toulouse, winless through four games, welcome Sochaux, who have not won in five.
