Saint-Etienne moved to the top of Ligue 1 after a narrow 1-0 win over Valenciennes at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard on Friday.
Romain Hamouma’s third goal of the season on 73 minutes was enough to give the home side the win and secure top spot on the table.
However, Christophe Galtier’s men could drop out of the top four by the end of the weekend in a typically congested Ligue 1 ladder.
Valenciennes drop one place to sixth on the table.
