Lyon have moved to the top of Ligue 1 provisionally with a 2-0 away triumph against Valenciennes on Friday.

Midfielder Gueida Fofana got Lyon off to the perfect start in the eighth minute when his strike from outside the area beat Valenciennes ‘keeper Nicolas Penneteau.

The victory was sewn up on 28 minutes when French international Bafetimbi Gomis turned in Alexandre Lacazette’s right-wing cross to double the lead.

With a full round of Ligue 1 matches to be played, Lyon moved three points clear of Paris Saint-Germain – who could overtake them with a win against Lille on Sunday.

The loss for Valenciennes, who are winless in four games, leaves them in 11th place, vulnerable to French champions Montpellier who are only one point behind.

Next weekend, Lyon travel to 16th-placed Ajaccio while Valenciennes will aim to snap their winless streak with a tough-away trip to Bordeaux.
