Ligue 1 wrap: Gameiro goal boost for PSG

SoccerNews in Ligue 1 20 Oct 2012

Paris Saint-Germain extended their unbeaten Ligue 1 run to nine games with a 1-0 victory at home to Stade de Reims on Saturday.

A second-half header from Kevin Gameiro was all that separated the sides, with Stade de Reims working hard to stifle PSG’s rhythm throughout the contest.

The visitors had the opportunity to take the lead through a penalty late in the first half, but a brilliant Salvatore Sirigu save denied Diego.

The win sees Carlo Ancelotti’s side provisionally move to top spot, level on 19 points with Marseille, who travel to Troyes on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Montpellier’s horror start to their title defence continued with a 2-1 loss at Rennes.

Goals from Jean Makoun and Mevlut Erdinc proved the difference as the champions slumped to their fifth loss from nine matches.

Valenciennes survived an early scare before prevailing 6-1 at home to Lorient.

Lorient took the lead through Benjamin Corgnet in the seventh minute, though the advantage lasted just four minutes when Colombian Carlos Sanchez levelled proceedings.

Anthony Le Tallec put Valenciennes in front with his first of two goals in the 14th minute, while Gael Danic extended the advantage and Vincent Aboubakar netted a late brace to put the result beyond doubt.

Emmanuel Riviere struck twice as Toulouse continued their impressive start to the season with a 4-0 thumping of Evian Thonon Gaillard away from home.

In other matches, 10-man Nancy held on for a 1-1 draw at home to Sochaux and Nice and Saint Etienne finished 1-1 in Nice.
