Ligue 1 newcomers Dijon have been handed a 5-1 thrashing by Stade Rennes in their first ever match in the top flight on Sunday.

First-half goals from Victor Hugo Montano and Julien Feret gave Rennes the advantage, though Brice Jovial’s strike a minute before half-time offered the home side some hope.

Abdoulrazak Boukari struck soon after the restart to restore Rennes’ two-goal advantage, and the points were tied up when centre-back Abdou Kader Mangane scored and Alexander Tettey hit their fifth.

Montano forced Rennes ahead as he converted a cross from Boukari following a swift counter-attack, moments after Feret had blazed over from the penalty spot.

Frederic Antonetti’s side made it 2-0 when Colombian Montano breezed by two defenders before laying the ball to Feret, who took his second chance at goal with pleasure.

Dijon pulled a goal back through Jovial on the stroke of half-time, but the second period was only four minutes old when Boukari pounced on an error to make it 3-1 to Rennes, before Gregory Thil put another penalty for Dijon wide.

A Feret corner was powered home by the head of Mangane as they turned the screw on their hosts, and with five minutes remaining Tettey shot through the legs of Jean-Daniel Padovani to wrap up a comprehensive victory.

In Sunday’s other game, Bordeaux suffered a 2-1 loss at home to Saint-Etienne despite Jussie Ferreira Vieira’s second-half penalty.

A Michael Ciani own goal and Pierre Aubameyang’s strike in the first half proved to be enough for Saint-Etienne.
