Lyon maintained their lead atop of Ligue 1 with a 1-0 win at Saint-Etienne as Marseille suffered a shock 3-0 defeat to Lorient on Sunday.

With Paris Saint-Germain closing the gap to just two points earlier on the weekend, Lyon were determined to restore their five-point buffer at the summit.

And despite defender Mouhamadou Dabo receiving a red card 10 minutes into the second half, the seven-time French champions secured victory thanks to a 65th-minute strike from Brazilian substitute Michel Bastos, who had only been on the pitch for four minutes.

Lyon are also five points clear of Marseille after they were soundly beaten 3-0 at home to Lorient.

Elie Baup’s side were looking to stay within two points of the league leaders, however, their home form let them down again, having already lost to Lyon 4-0 last time out.

Jeremie Aliadiere converted a 38th-minute penalty after Marseille striker Charles Kabore was dismissed for bringing down the former Arsenal striker inside the area.

And the visitors secured their third win in four league games following second-half goals from Benjamin Corgnet and Kevin Monnet-Paquet.

Earlier on Sunday, title hopefuls Bordeaux dropped points after they were held to a goalless draw at Rennes.
