Liverpool lead chase for Alderweireld

Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf is reporting that Liverpool are in a pole position to sign Ajax star Toby Alderweireld.

It is no secret the Reds are looking to reinforce their back line with Jamie Carragher retiring and Martin Skrtel likely to leave, and they have been linked with a number of high-profile players.

According to De Telegraaf, Ajax stopper Toby Alderweireld is one of the first names on their wish list.

The highly rated defender has a contract until June 2014, meaning Ajax have no choice but to cash in on him in the summer transfer window.

It is believed the player himself prefers a move to Liverpool, where he could be joined by club teammate Christian Eriksen.

Having sold Jan Vertonghen to Tottenham for €9 million last summer, the Eredivisie giants want to get a similar amount for Alderweireld.

Newcastle United are also keen, but there are no doubts it is Liverpool that are leading the race for the Belgian’s signature.
