Derek Llambias has announced his resignation as Newcastle United managing director with immediate effect.

The news comes following the controversial appointment of former manager Joe Kinnear as director of football.

Kinnear, who was at the helm at St James’ Park for a five-month spell in the disastrous 2008-09 season, in which Newcastle were relegated to the Championship, was re-hired by the club to oversee transfer activity on Tuesday.

The former Wimbledon boss had previously announced his return via the media and proceeded to criticise the board (including Llambias), the fans and the local press in a series of interviews.

Llambias, who linked up with Newcastle in 2008, made no hint as to the reasons for his resignation.

“I have had an incredible journey during my five years at the club, including some challenging times,” he said in a statement released by the club.

“I will reflect with great fondness on my time in the North East and, in me, Newcastle United have a lifelong supporter.

“I want to thank the staff for their hard work, our fans for their support of the club, and wish them all well for the future.”
