Lorient starlet hints at Portugal switch

Lorient full-back Raphael Guerreiro has admitted that a switch to Portuguese Primeira Liga would appeal to him.

The 20-year-old was born in France and has spent his entire career up to date in his native country, but has opted to represent Portugal at international level due to his father being Portuguese.

After being handed his debut in the Euro 2016 qualifier against Armenia, Guerreiro scored the only goal in a 1-0 friendly win over France, while also impressing playing for Lorient in Ligue 1.

And while Europe’s top clubs are casting admiring glances his way, the youngster admits that he could see himself playing in Portugal’s top flight some day in the future.

“I am a supporter of Benfica, but to play in Portugal I would have to study all the possibilities,” Guerreiro told O Jogo.

“The big three are interesting. But, we will see, if an opportunity arises.”

While acting as a left-back in the national team, the youngster has been mostly used as a left-sided midfielder at Lorient, and he has been in fine form this season, starting 17 league matches and scoring three goals in the process.
