(GSM) – Los Angeles Galaxy suffered what is only their third defeat of the Major League Soccer season, losing 2-3 to Chicago Fire on Sunday.

Days after a disappointing 4-1 defeat by Puerto Rico Islanders in the CONCACAF Champions League, LA Galaxy again failed to convince in a home match with Chicago.

The visiting side scored the opening goal through Marco Pappa in the third minute and two minutes later, Collins John made it 0-2. When Mike Banner added another in the 19th minute, the match seemed all but over.

Landon Donovan did step up and pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 37th minute, and converted another spot kick with nine minutes to play. It wasn’t enough to threaten Chicago’s lead, however.

LA to keep a comfortable advantage over their nearest rivals in the Western Conference. Real Salt Lake are six points behind but do have a game in hand.

In the Eastern Conference, leaders Columbus Crew suffered a painful 3-1 defeat at Chivas USA who scored through Justin Braun, Blair Gavin and Carlos Borja. Steven Lenhart netted the Crew’s only goal.
