Luiz confident of World Cup success

Chelsea defender David Luiz is ‘sure’ Brazil will win the World Cup in their homeland in 2014, despite Wednesday’s defeat to England.

Goals from Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard cancelled out Fred’s effort to give the home side a morale-boosting win at Wembley against a Brazil side that was captained by Luiz.

Despite his disappointment at defeat, the Blues’ man is confident Brazil will hit their straps by the time next year’s tournament rolls around, and has put Wednesday’s loss down to a lack of fitness in the players who play in Brazil being in the middle of their off-season.

“Of course I want to win the World Cup next year and I know, for sure, that we will win,” Luiz told reporters.

“It was a great night for me to be captain here because the English people have been a big help to me since I came to play in this country.

“But although it was a great night for me, it was not a great result.

“England’s level of fitness was different to Brazil’s because for 40 per cent of our team just starting their season, so you need to take account of that in this game.”

  1. Performing in home soil brings enthusiasm, but to win a World Cup you need pragmatic players who can play to win. Simply, what do you see in 2002? I saw a Brazilian squad that had players who played to win: a squad that had great technical and tactical players. We are in 2013 and Brazil have declined to an alarming eighteen place in World FIFA Raking [below the top-10]. What is expected in 2014? Optimism is real but even the best coach cannot do miracles for a team which has not performed well in “friendlies” and key Tournaments. Spain, Germany, Argentina, Italy, England: one of them will win the 2014 World Cup!

  2. To win the World Cup 2014, Brazil had to advance in World FIFA Ranking, which is now too late! Spain have kept the top position for eight years in a row [1st Place]; the first team Worldwide which has done so! I am stunned that a defender can make such an allegation that Brazil will win the World Cup 2014 without being somewhat objective! Neymar is not a physical striker [that counts!]It would be nice getting a sixth title, but the reality of the now squad says something different [lacks in flair, accuracy in attack, etc.]. See 1970-1994-2002 Brazil and you’ll see what I mean!
