Maggio: Italy must improve against Spain

Christian Maggio did not hide his disappointment with Italy’s 3-0 friendly defeat against Russia on Friday.

The 30-year-old wing-back was at fault for two of the three goals scored by Dick Advocaat’s side as the Azzurri suffered a worrying third straight defeat in their last warm-up game before Euro 2012.

“I will have to be honest: this was a bad night,” Maggio told Rai.

“I hope that this was the last one and that we will do better in our next match.

“So many things did not go right, but we wanted to do well before the Euros. We still have a few days to improve.

“Now we must understand what went wrong and try not to repeat those things at the Euros. We surely are not happy, but this is when we have to improve.”

Italy will kick off their Euro 2012 campaign against Spain on June 10, and Maggio does not rule out his team’s chances against the European and world champions.

“Spain are an incredible side, but anything can happen in football,” he said.

“But it is clear that we cannot play against them as we did against Russia.”
