Scottish giants Rangers will find themselves in the Scottish Third Division next season.
The financial meltdown that caused their liquidation was caused by bad management at every level of the club.
Newco Rangers as they are now known will have a major transitional period ahead of them.
As everybody now knows the club formerly known as Glasgow Rangers was liquidated, after failing to pay numerous tax bills and other fees. The previous owners and chairmen of the club put the giants into an untenable situation.
The new owner Charles Green seems to be very opinionated and today he labelled the SPL bigots for not allowing Newco Rangers into the Scottish top flight. He told Sky Sports: “ Some of it has been driven by bigotry, some of it’s been driven by jealousy and some of it’s been driven by all the wrong motives.”
A lot of Rangers fans don’t seem to want Green running their club. I’m not sure why that is, but he doesn’t seem to be a popular man amongst the Rangers faithful.
Rangers have lost a lot of their best players this summer, as a result of the turmoil at the club. The likes Steven Naismith, Steven Davis, Alan McGregor and Steven Whittaker have all left the club. Naismith has joined Premier League Everton.
Former-captain Davis has joined Southampton and Whittaker has also moved to a Premier League club in Norwich City. McGregor is currently mulling over a move to the Turkish top flight with Besiktas and Galatasaray interested in his services.
Unfortunately for Rangers most of their top players left on free transfers, which means there isn’t much money in the Rangers transfer coffers this summer. Had the players agreed to transfer their contracts to Newco Rangers, then at least Rangers would have got a fee for their services.
However, the players had no obligation to transfer their contracts to the new company, as the old company ceased to exist, as far I understand it. The players that left on free transfers seem to have branded traitors by the Rangers fans.
Its very important that the fans stick by their club in their hour need. Rangers fans have always been amongst the most loyal in British football. Their loyalty could be tested as the club aim to rebuild their team and reputation.
The club aren’t exactly starting from scratch. They may not have kept all their players, but some players transferred their contracts to Newco and Ibrox still belongs to the Gers, or should I say the ‘New Gers‘. Rangers have a good following but even the most harden fans won’t want to be watching third division football for long.
To make sure that the fans stay on side I think the club need to achieve immediate promotion. They will be expected to run away with the league just because of who they are. Rangers are bound to add players to their currently threadbare squad and no doubt they will be of good enough quality to get the club promoted.
I don’t think Rangers could have a better man in charge of the club right now than Ally McCoist. The man is Rangers through and through. He is a Rangers legend from his playing days, but more important he really loves the club.
His first year in charge of the club has certainly been eventful. However, despite rumours he may walk away from his job he has stayed. He would be an even bigger hero if he could get Rangers back to the top flight.
Now that their future has been decided the club can make a fresh start. Most of the financial issues have gone and the club can get back to concentrating on playing football. Rangers being in the third division will be a shock to the system of Rangers, but it will be an even bigger shock to Scottish football.
The affect of Rangers not being in the SPL is a discussion for another day. For now though I wish Rangers well for the sake of the fans and faithful servants like Ally McCoist. Hopefully we will see them back at the top level of football very soon.
Do Rangers deserve to be playing in the third division?
