Malesani maintains Palermo hope

New Palermo manager Alberto Malesani said he is optimistic about the club’s chances of surviving in Italy’s top flight this season.

Malesani flew into Sicily on Tuesday to become the club’s 25th coach since 2002, following the dismissal of Gian Piero Gasperini on Monday.

And with Palermo sitting bottom of Serie A, the former Genoa boss is under no illusions of the task facing him in guiding Palermo to safety, but insisted he has the squad at his disposal to avoid relegation.

The 58-year-old was philosophical on the club’s survival chances.

“It is from the most difficult situations that the greatest achievements emerge,” he told reporters.

“I am at a great club and the offer interested me straight away. President Maurizio Zamparini and I analysed everything and I will treasure the indications he gave me.

“I’m certain this is a good squad that still has to find its identity and that will be my toughest task. I’ll speak to everyone and try to extrapolate the right motivation to secure safety, which is what Palermo deserve.

“I don’t make promises, as I prefer to provide facts on the field. We have to pretend that we start a new season now, when we play against Pescara on Sunday.

“Nothing will be decided until the final round and we must try to finish above the bottom three.”
