Manchester City ready to move for Inigo Martinez

Real Sociedad stalwart Inigo Martinez was a man firmly in the sights of Catalan super club Barcelona this summer, but the Blaugrana ultimately decided against activating the defender’s €32m release clause.

Their inability to negotiate a deal in the last transfer window has left the Spanish international available for a January move, but it is Manchester City who are now the favourites to secure his services, according to the Mirror.

Pep Guardiola has been facing somewhat of an injury nightmare amongst his defence as both John Stones and Benjamin Mendy are sidelined with long term injuries. The absence of two of the Citizens’ first choice defenders has thus forced the Manchester club to seek replacements in the January transfer window, and Inigo Martinez is a player brimming with talent.

The centre half is now in his seventh season with Real Sociedad and has established himself as one of Spain’s top defenders. At 26 years of age the talented defender still has time to develop, and a move to Manchester United could be the perfect way to accelerate his career and earn himself a spot in the Spain squad for the 2018 World Cup.
