Tottenham’s Harry Kane is being linked with a big money move to Manchester United

According to reports from Sky Sports yesterday, Manchester United are interested in signing Tottenham striker Harry Kane this summer.

Reports of an imminent £50million bid for the youngster have been mooted in various tabloids.

Strikers

It seems that United boss Louis van Gaal is looking to sign a new striker this summer.

There are doubts over the future over Dutch striker Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao has returned to Monaco after an unsuccessful loan spell at Old Trafford.

Van Persie endured a difficult campaign, scoring just ten goals in his 27 appearances last season. His campaign has been hampered by injury and lack of form. The 31-year-old has been linked with a number of clubs in recent months, including Juventus and the two Turkish giants Galatasaray and Fenerbache.

In truth, he struggled with his fitness in the previous season and made just 18 Premier League starts that campaign. It seems his old fitness problems from his Arsenal days may be rearing their ugly head once again.

Falcao’s stay at United was a poor one, as the Colombian striker scored just four times in his 26 appearances for the Red Devils. It was clear to see quite a while ago that he Red Devils would not be taking up the option of signing Falcao on a permanent basis.

Mexican striker Javier Hernandez spent last season on-loan at Spanish giants Real Madrid, where he was used mostly as a back-up to French striker Karim Benzema. Chicarito’s loan spell was not exactly a roaring success either. The Mexican is likely head to pastures new this summer.

Youngster James Wilson was used fleetingly last season by Van Gaal. The 19-year-old made 13 appearances for the Red Devils, but only four of those were starts. He looks set to be sent out on-loan for next season to gain first team experience.

The only striker at United that enjoyed anywhere near a decent campaign was England captain Wayne Rooney. Despite being deployed as a central midfielder at times, he still finished as the team’s top scorer for the season with 14 goals in all competitions.

Needed

It is clear to see that United are in need of a new striker for next season. For United to have finished fourth in the Premier League with their top scorer only scoring 12 Premier League goals is quite impressive.

The performance of Spanish ‘keeper David de Gea at the other end of the pitch bailed them out on a number of occasions. The Red Devils may not have that luxury next season.

Kane

Kane has enjoyed a meteoric rise this season. He has gone from unknown to England international in less than a season. At 21-years-old he scored 21 top-flight goals in his first season as a regular starter for Tottenham.

His impressive displays won him the PFA Young Player of the Year award and widespread acclaim from the media and fans alike. He looks to have a bright future in the game. His football intelligence and eye for goal have already shone through. No doubt Kane would be an asset to any team, including United.

However, the youngster himself stated last month that he did not intent to leave the north London club this summer. I am sure most people connected with Spurs will want to see Kane stay at White Hart Lane this summer.

Elsewhere

United were supposedly not interested in signing Kane just a month ago, but Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal has now had a change of heart and are now tracking the striker.

This is the sort of rumour that happens every summer when a young player has had a good season. United have probably got a big list of striking targets for this summer and Kane is likely to be just one name on that list.

United do need a striker and have been linked with a number of them already this summer. For all the talk though I just cannot see a deal happening for Harry Kane this summer.

Kane comes across as a guy with a good head on his shoulders for a young player. This speculation is unlikely to unsettle him and I believe he will still be knocking the goals in next season, and probably at Spurs not United.

Will Manchester United sign Harry Kane this summer?
