Diego Maradona has mocked Brazilian great Pele, accusing him of talking nonsensically ‘when he takes the wrong pills’.

The former Argentina international and Pele are seen as two of the best players in the history of the game, but they have long enjoyed a difficult relationship.

Maradona has once more made the headlines with some controversial comments.

“I think I’m the best player ever. Why would you compare me to Pele? My mother said that I’m stronger and that he used to play with players who didn’t even move on the pitch,” Maradona told reporters.

“I don’t like comparisons with Pele because of the stupid things he says. He keeps on saying stupid stuff when he takes the wrong pills.”

The Argentine legend also had his say on Lionel Messi, claiming that the Barcelona star has not reached his level just yet.

“Messi? He hardly touched the ball against AC Milan, but he remains a great player. However, I still see myself as the better player.”

Maradona then went on to discuss former club Napoli’s chances of winning Serie A, and insisted that Walter Mazzarri’s side can still catch Juventus in the title race.

“Napoli are hunting Juventus. I don’t think that Juventus are a better team than Napoli. You cannot declare one team to be the favourites with 12 more games to go,” the 52-year-old added.

“We have all seen that Juventus are a different team in away games compared to what they do at home. For me, the Scudetto race is still open.”

One simply has to watch these two great legends in action, and the answer is evident: They are both fantastic dribblers with excellent ball accuracy. But Maradona played one World Cup with the Argentinian squad in 1986. If Maradona takes into account World record, Pele had surpassed all: 1,281+ goals; 3 World Cups; 16 years old in the National Team. It takes someone with mythological prowess to accomplish what Pele did. I have great respect for both of these legends. Maradona only ought to know that Pele knew who he was at 16 years old in the Brazilian squad. Let FIFA be the Judge, not us!
