Catania have appointed Rolando Maran as their new coach, following the departure of Vincenzo Montella for Fiorentina.

Former Chievo defender Maran, who led Serie B outfit Varese into last season’s promotion play-offs, has penned a one-year contract with Catania.

“Catania announces that it has assigned the technical responsibility of the first team for the 2012/13 season to coach Rolando Maran,” a statement on the club’s official website read.

“The new technician will be officially presented to the media later this week.”

Maran’s move to Catania comes just days after Varese’s 4-2 aggregate defeat by Sampdoria in the final of the second-tier promotion play-offs.

The appointment was confirmed only a matter of hours after Fiorentina had announced the arrival of Montella at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.
