(GSM) – Olympique Marseille are champions of France after a 3-1 win over Stade Rennes while Auxerre suffered a 2-1 loss at Lyon.

After Lyon came back from behind to beat Auxerre 2-1 earlier on Wednesday, Marseille knew that a win in their home game with Rennes would secure the league title.

Argentinian Gabriel Heinze gave l’OM a dream start with an opening goal in the fifth minute, but home fans were silenced in the 38th when Jimmy Briand netted the equaliser.

But celebration returned to the Velodrome when Mamadou Niang restored Marseille’s lead in the 76th and Lucho Gonzalez removed all doubt a minute later, 3-1.

This year’s league crown is the ninth in Marseille’s history. The southern club won their last Ligue 1 title in 1992, at the end of a very successful era that had them dominate the competition four years in a row.
