With Sevilla having sold influential midfielder Ivan Rakitic to Barcelona this summer, the Spanish side have been eyeing up a viable replacement. Marseilles’ Mathieu Valbuena looks to be the best successor as he’s long stewing in the French league, playing in a division considerably below his abilities.

Valbuena last season scored three and made six assists from midfield, while creating 90 chances. He would fit seamlessly in the hole left by Rakitic’s exit this summer, and as a result 888 Sport are giving odds of 11/13 for the 29-year-old to make the move to Spain.

The midfielder has been representing his country in this summer’s World Cup and has showcased his ability on the biggest stage during the tournament before France’s exit. Sevilla would be a great test of his talents, and considering he turns 30 in September, there could be little time left in his career to play at the highest level.

With Valbuena returning to Marseilles following Les Blues tournament exit, transfer talks can now begin.
