Wigan boss Roberto Martinez is concerned about the fitness of midfielder Callum McManaman ahead of their vital relegation run-in.
The 21-year-old has been the subject of much attention following his controversial tackle on Massadio Haidara in Wigan’s 2-1 win over Newcastle, a challenge that went unpunished despite pleas for retrospective action to be taken.
But Martinez has now revealed McManaman, who scored in their 3-0 FA Cup win over Everton earlier this month, could miss the upcoming encounter with Norwich after sustaining an ankle injury in the impressive victory at Goodison Park.
“Callum’s been carrying an injury to his ankle, which caused him to be substituted against both Newcastle and Everton,” Martinez told reporters.
“Our major concern now is making sure he’s fully fit and able to take to the field against Norwich.”
Wigan still sit three points adrift of safety at the bottom of the Premier League, and Martinez is keen to ensure McManaman is fit to try and pull his side away from danger.
“He hasn’t trained with the rest of the team yet, and the next 48 hours will be crucial,” he said.
