Javier Mascherano has been quite the journeyman during his long and glittering career, but he could be set for a final move to China in order to give him one more challenge. The former Liverpool defender had been heavily linked with a return to his boyhood club River Plate, but it now appears that Chinese side Hebei Fortune are the front runners to acquire the Argentine’s signature, according to Spanish publication Sport.

The flexible defender, who has also played in central defensive midfield, has been a stalwart in the Barcelona starting XI for seven seasons, but in this campaign he has only made six La Liga appearances. At 33 years of age, Mascherano is enetering the twilight of his career, and it appears that he wants one final challenge in China before he retires.

The potential destination is Hebei Fortune, who currently sit seventh in the Chinese Super League table, 24 points off leaders Guangzhou Evergrande.
