Lothar Matthaeus believes Germany do not have any superstars who could single-handedly lead them to glory at Euro 2012.
The former Bulgaria coach feels attacking midfielder Mesut Oezil has plenty of quality, but does not believe the Real Madrid star is of the same level as Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.
“I’m always pretty cautious when people say that one player could single-handedly help his side to a trophy. Oezil obviously has a lot of quality, but so does Sami Khedira as holding midfielder,” Matthaus told Eurosport.
“Germany don’t really have one superstar like Lionel Messi, who could make the difference all by himself.”
Matthaus discussed the importance of Bastian Schweinsteiger, who has recently returned from injury, but stressed that Joachim Loew’s side do not depend on the Bayern Munich man.
“He’s still not fully recovered from that calf injury, and is fighting the disappointment of the lost Champions League final. Nobody is irreplaceable in the national team, though. We don’t depend on Schweinsteiger.”
Germany lock horns with Portugal on Saturday in Lviv, before facing Netherlands and Denmark.
