Paris Saint-Germain’s Blaise Matuidi believes France must not dwell on their 1-0 World Cup qualifying defeat to Spain.

A second-half strike from Pedro put paid to the hosts chances of opening up a five-point lead at the top of Group I and now sit second.

France had several excellent opportunities during the match and Matuidi insists he wants to move on from the loss to the reigning world and European champions.

“It takes a lot of physical effort in the placement too. This is a team who handles the ball well, that is their strength,” he told RMC Sport.

“We tried to play with ours. Unfortunately, it did not materialise, but we can be satisfied with what we did as a whole.”

The former Saint-Etienne midfielder believes that while the result was disappointing, there is still an opportunity for automatic qualification.

“We knew we could put them in trouble that was the case. We also knew that it was going to be complicated, we have had difficult moments,” he added.

“Their goal hurt us. But we could have opened the scoring, so we have regrets. But we must move on.”
