Lazio striker Mauro Zarate is prepared to snub interest from a number of high-profile clubs in favour of returning to Argentina, the player’s representative has revealed.
The controversial striker wants to have his contract at Lazio rescinded having been frozen out of the squad since November, with a number of English clubs ready to pounce should he become a free agent.
Arsenal, Sunderland, Liverpool and Stoke are all keeping close tabs on Zarate, but his brother and agent claims the 26-year-old would prefer to return to Argentina.
“My brother could terminate his contract with Lazio,” Roly Zarate explained to Argentine TV station TycSports.
“Mauro wants to go back to Argentina and Velez would be ideal.”
It was at Velez Sarsfield that Zarate began his professional career and the return to his boyhood club could help the player calm his temperament and start living up to his potential.
The talented forward has spent last five years at Stadio Olimpico, featuring in 104 Serie A matches and scoring 25 goals in the process.
