Lionel Messi has declared himself ‘very happy’ with Barcelona’s win over Real Madrid in the first leg of the Supercopa on Thursday.

The record-breaking forward scored a 70th-minute penalty to help Barca secure a 3-2 win over Jose Mourinho’s side at Camp Nou, and he was in high spirits when addressing the result.

“The match was like all Barca-Madrid matches, it was tough, but we knew we could do it,” he told fans on his Facebook page. “We are very happy with the result.”

Messi did not comment on the mistake by Victor Valdes that gifted Angel Di Maria a late goal to trim the deficit to one goal heading into Wednesday’s second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Tito Vilanova’s Barca side travel to Osasuna on Sunday for their second league game of the season, while Real head to Getafe the same day.
