Arguably the best player in footballing history Lionel Messi is set to sign a ‘lifetime’ contract that will keep him at Barcelona until he retires, according to ESPN.

This is not a new concept for the Catalan super club as midfielder Andres Iniesta signed a similar contract earlier in the month, but tying their world famous Argentinian down for good will be quite the coup for Barcelona. Messi had been linked with a reunion with Pep Guardiola at Manchester City but such a move has always been fairly unlikely.

Barcelona CEO Oscar Grau announced at the club’s annual general meeting that “Messi signed a four-year deal in June, but the club will offer him a lifetime contract.” Despite having entered his thirties now the diminutive Argentinean is still at the top of his game and has already scored 11 goals in eight La Liga games this season.

As Barcelona’s top scorer of all time with 522 goals Messi will be remembered as one of the greatest players in history and will likely spend his entire career at the Catalan club – a remarkable display of loyalty given the landscape of modern football.
