Messi values trophies over awards

Barcelona star Lionel Messi says individual awards do not provide him with the same “excitement” as winning trophies with his team-mates.

The Argentine claimed a fourth Ballon d’Or ahead of Andres Iniesta and Cristiano Ronaldo thanks to his 91 goals in 2012 alone, but claims success with Barca is his main objective.

“Individual awards do not stir up quite the same excitement in me,” the 25-year-old told France Football.

“There really is little that can compare to winning a title alongside your team.

“I do not have any real objectives though. I just want to soak up the present.”

But despite his preference for team victories, Messi insisted he remains proud of his awards and explained how each of the four successes have been unique experiences.

“My family being there made the first time I won (was) really special, while I completely did not expect the second,” he said.

“Joining the list of (Michel) Platini and (Johan) Cruyff for my third was an honour. This latest one just means I have surpassed them. They are all different, yet important.

“The records are nice, but I do not always dream about them. I would love to win more, but it is not an obsession.”
