Former Germany international Christoph Metzelder has called time on his 13-year playing career.

The 32-year-old has turned out for Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Schalke in an injury-ravaged career.

He appeared for the national side on 47 occasions, playing in two World Cup campaigns including their 2-0 loss to Brazil in the 2002 final.
“I am thankful for the 13 years,” Metzelder said.
“I turned professional straight out of high school and looking back I could not have hoped for a better run.
“Even the injuries are part of the story.”
The centre-back spent seven years at Dortmund, before playing for three years at Real Madrid until 2010. His medal haul includes league titles in Germany and Spain, as well as the DFB-Pokal with Schalke.
He returned to Schalke in 2010 but a host of injuries meant he was unable to hold on to a regular starting spot in their first team.
Metzelder made his last appearance for Germany in their 2008 European Championship 1-0 final defeat to Spain.
