Serb Sinisa Mihajlovic has been appointed coach of Serie A club Fiorentina in place of Cesare Prandelli, who takes over the Italian national side after the World Cup, the Tuscany club confirmed Friday.

Mihajlovic, 41, coached Catania last season helping them stay in the Serie A where they finished 13th.

The former Serbian international defender played for Roma, Sampdoria, Lazio and Inter Milan, and was previously deputy coach to Roberto Mancini at Inter Milan from 2006-2008.

In November 2008 he took over at struggling Bologna but was sacked after just over five months because of poor results.
