Mikel Arteta Praises ‘Best Midfield Ever’; Suarez Keen on Liverpool Stay

Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta has dubbed Spain’s midfield as the “best the world has ever seen”.

Arteta supported his bold claim by suggesting that La Furia Roja have six of the top 20 players in the world competing for only three midfield places in the starting XI.

“I just watch them play and say ‘wow’. I think it’s the best midfield the world has ever seen,” Arteta was quoted as saying on the Gunners official website.

“You cannot find a selection of players to match [Xabi] Alonso, [Andres] Iniesta, [Cesc] Fabregas, [David] Silva, [Sergio] Busquets and Xavi – six of the top 20 players in the world going for three positions. So what can you do?”

The 29-year-old has yet to be capped as a Spain international but remains optimistic of breaking into Spain’s senior squad.

“I was very close a few times to having the chance to go, but for one reason or another it didn’t happen. I’m going to keep fighting though, that’s for sure – it’s one of my targets and I won’t stop going for it because I really want to represent my country.

“The level of the team is incredible though, so I know how hard it will be. The exposure of being at Arsenal will help, so now it’s up to me – if I do really well here, then perhaps I have a chance.”

In other news, Liverpool FC striker Luis Suarez has expressed his desire to remain at Anfield for ‘many more years’ after his current contract expires.

“I’ve just started a phase of my career which I always dreamed about and wanted to do, which is to play for Liverpool,” the Uruguayan told the Daily Mirror.

“I have five years left on my contract and I think beyond that, I’m already thinking about staying many more years at Liverpool.

“It’s a club I like. I feel very good about being here, about being in the city.

“I feel very pleased. It would be difficult to match the atmosphere, hunger for success and glory that this club has at another team.”

The Uruguayan hitman fully expects his partnership with Andy Carroll to flourish now that the Englishman is fully fit.

“Playing alongside a player of Andy’s quality, who’s big, skilful, who brings the ball down so well, makes it easy for a striker to play with him,” Suarez said.

“What happened though, was that Andy had the bad luck to be injured for several games and when he came back from that, he picked up another injury.

“It was difficult for him to get himself into the team because just when Andy came back, the team was playing well and the manager didn’t know who he could drop.

“Now having trained and after a good pre-season for Andy with his teammates, the more training sessions we have together, he will be better.

“We’ll get a much better understanding of each other and that can only be good for the team.”
