FC Dallas climbed to the top of the Western Conference in Major League Soccer with a 2-0 win over Real Salt Lake on Saturday.

The win, Dallas’ third from four matches in 2013, came thanks to goals in the last 20 minutes from Fabian Castillo and Jackson Goncalves.

Real Salt Lake finished the match with 10 men after Cuban midfielder Yordany Alvarez was given a second yellow card with six minutes to play as the 11,000 home fans left the FC Dallas Stadium in good spirits.

Dallas enjoyed good spells of possession in the first half and Kenny Cooper was unlucky not to give them an early lead, while they kept Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Josh Saunders busy after the break as well.

And after a sustained stint of pressure, the hosts finally got the goal they deserved when Colombian Castillo thrashed a shot past Saunders and into the roof of the net from a tight angle.

It came thanks to a smart ball from Goncalves and he then turned scorer with nine minutes to play.

Saunders attempted to dribble the ball out after a back-pass but was put under pressure by Goncalves, who eventually poked the ball into an empty net.

It was a horrific mistake that summed up Real Salt Lake’s night on a match they were simply never in.

And their misery was compounded by Alvarez’s red card, which came after he was adjudged to have dived in a bid to win a free-kick.

The Houston Dynamo came from behind to beat Western Conference high-flyers the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1 in Texas.

Jamaican Darren Mattocks gave the Canadians the lead after 36 minutes but Houston were a threat after the break.

And they levelled on 56 minutes through English midfielder Giles Barnes before Warren Creavalle bagged the winner seven minutes later.

Chris Wondolowski scored the only goal of the match as the San Jose Earthquakes beat the Seattle Sounders 1-0 while the Los Angeles Galaxy edged a 10-man Colorado Rapids outfit 1-0 thanks to Mike Magee’s penalty.
