MLS wrap: Donovan inspires Galaxy

A Landon Donovan double fired the LA Galaxy to a much-needed 3-2 win over Real Salt Lake in the MLS on Wednesday.

The reigning champions headed into the game on the back of a 1-0 victory against the Portland Timbers which snapped an eight-match winless streak.

And they built on that with a triumph in Utah, although they had to do it the hard way after Kyle Beckerman and Alvaro Saborio scored in the first 25 minutes for Real Salt Lake.

Donovan – who has enjoyed two impressive loan stints at Everton in recent years – responded for the Galaxy with a 29th-minute goal.

Real Salt Lake took their 2-1 lead into the break but Mike Magee levelled proceedings just five minutes into the second half before Donovan’s telling impact.

The attacker bagged his second goal for the night with 22 minutes to play and it proved enough to give Bruce Arena’s side all three points.

Will Bruin scored twice in the final 20 minutes as Houston Dynamo came from behind to clinch a 3-3 draw with strugglers Toronto FC.

Ashtone Morgan gave Toronto a 13th minute lead but Robert Boswell responded just seven minutes later for the Dynamo.

Danny Koevermans’ quick double before half-time looked to have Toronto set for their away win in nine.

But Bruin had other ideas, scoring his first on 73 minutes before he hit an injury time equaliser.

In other matches, Alan Gordon and Chris Wondolowski scored in the final 10 minutes to give the San Jose Earthquakes a 2-1 win over the Colorado Rapids while former Aston Villa striker Juan Pablo Angel also netted late as Chivas USA defeated the Montreal Impact 2-1.

Other results saw the Vancouver Whitecaps and New York Red Bulls play out a 1-1 draw while the match between the Seattle Sounders and Sporting Kansas City ended in the same scoreline.
