Montreal Impact have maintained their unbeaten start to the new MLS season thanks to a 2-1 win over Toronto on Saturday.

A Patrice Bernier penalty in the 34th minute gave the Impact the advantage at Montreal’s Stade Olympique, and when Marco Di Vaio scored in first-half stoppage time the home side looked to be cruising.

Toronto pulled a goal back in the 68th minute through a Rob Earnshaw penalty, but Montreal held on for their third win from as many games to take a three-point lead at the top of the Eastern Conference.

Philadelphia Union, meanwhile, are second in the East thanks to a 1-0 triumph over New England Revolution.

With things seemingly headed for a draw, a Jack McInerney strike in the 76th minute was enough to give Philly all three points.

Columbus Crew were held to a 1-1 draw at home by the San Jose Earthquakes.

Justin Morrow’s 74th-minute goal cancelled out Glauber’s opener for the Crew five minutes earlier, while Real Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids also drew 1-1.

New York Red Bulls were unable to post their first win of the new season when they were held to a 0-0 draw at home against DC United, and Sporting Kansas City and Chicago Fire also played out a goalless draw.

In the West, Seattle Sounders registered their first point of the new season when they drew 1-1 all at home with the Portland Timbers.

A first-half goal from Edward Johnson looked to have given Seattle a much-needed win, but a 91st-minute strike from Rodney Wallace secured a point for the visitors at CenturyLink Field.
