A first-half brace from Jack McInerney inspired Philadelphia Union to a comprehensive 4-0 win over Sporting Kansas City on Saturday.

Having only scored eight times all season, goals from McInerney, Lionard Pajoy and Antoine Hoppenot helped end Philadelphia’s six-game winless run and secure victory over Kansas City for the first time in their franchise history.

McInerney, making only his second start of the season, put the home side ahead barely a minute into the match with a blast the ball home from six yards.

He completed his brace two minutes from the break. Midfielder Freddy Adu had his free kick saved but McInerney was on hand to tuck away the rebound.

Despite second-half pressure from the Eastern Conference’s second-placed team, Philadelphia added a third on 81 minutes through Lionard Pajoy, who stepped up to convert a penalty following a foul on Hoppenot.

And Hoppenot was in the thick of the action six minutes later after splitting through Kansas City’s defence from halfway and chipping over the incoming Jimmy Nielsen.

In Montreal, the Impact defeated 2011 MLS Cup finalists Houston Dynamo 4-2.

Sanna Nyassi opened the scoring for Montreal on three minutes but Brad Davis curled home a wonderful free kick for Houston to level the score after 16 minutes.

David Arnaud’s towering header had hosts Impact back in front five minutes later, before Will Bruin ensured the match was level at half-time with his finish just before the break.

Hassoun Camara put Montreal back in front for good in the 60th minute courtesy of a volley and the game was put to rest when Patrice Bernier netted the Impact’s fourth from the penalty spot several minutes later.

At The Depot Center, LA Galaxy clinched their second successive win, disposing of Vancouver Whitecaps 3-0 courtesy of first-half goals from Mike Magee, Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan.

Elsewhere in Saturday’s fixtures, 10-man Chicago Fire edged the visiting Columbus Crew 2-1 and Chris Tierney netted an equalised four minutes into added time to earn New England Revolution a 2-2 draw against Toronto FC.

All three goals between San Jose and Real Salt Lake were scored in the final 15 minutes but the Earthquakes prevailed 2-1 and Chivas USA held Dallas to a goalless draw at FC Dallas Stadium.
