The Bundesliga leaders moved one step closer to the title after a comprehensive win over the 10-man visitors saw them go 18 points clear at the top.

Heynckes was happy the players did not allow their momentum to drop following their midweek Champions League win over Arsenal.

“The team needed something to find their rhythm and, with the two goals, we had a cushion,” Heynckes told reporters.

“Then came the red card and, against 10 men, we were able to pass the ball around easily.

“The team did well and scored good goals. We wanted to keep up our momentum and not be swayed by any premature praise. We want to play even better than before and be more successful.”

Arjen Robben and Javi Martinez were on the scoresheet in the first half for Bayern at the Allianz Arena.

After Sebastian Proedl was sent off for Werder Bremen, a Theodor Gebre Selassie own goal, Mario Gomez brace and Franck Ribery strike sealed the win for the hosts.

Robben was pleased with the performance after several changes to the team that won at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.

“It was important to win again today and maintain our rhythm. A score of 6-1 sounds easy, but it’s obviously not easy if you come into a game like this without match practice,” he told the club’s website.

“There were six new players on the field, so huge credit to all the players. After going 4-0 up we weren’t as focused and we eased off by a couple of percent.

“You can always let in a goal in those circumstances, but it’s a shame, especially for Manuel (Neuer), who obviously wants to keep clean sheets.”

Werder Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf described the loss as a ‘nasty beating’ and was full of praise for Bayern.

“It was the tough challenge we expected. Bayern are in absolutely superb form at the moment,” he said.

“We made a very good start and our shape was excellent. We did many things very well. But if you let your tactical guard drop against these opponents, they’ll simply exploit the gaps.”
