Pitso Mosimane has been sacked from his role as South Africa head coach following a seven-match winless run.

Former ‘Bafana Bafana’ team captain Steve Komphela, who joined Mosimane’s staff as an assistant in April, will take charge of the first team on an interim basis.

Komphela will prepare the team for their World Cup qualifier against Botswana on Saturday, before an international friendly with Gabon on June 15.

South Africa have failed to win in their last seven matches, and were held to a 1-1 draw in a World Cup qualifier at home to Ethiopia on Sunday.

Moroka Swallows coach Gordon Igesund is reportedly the South Africa Football Association’s leading candidate to replace Mosimane on a full-time basis.
