Mourinho not worried about gap to Barcelona

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho says he’s not concerned about Barcelona’s advantage on top of the La Liga table.

The defending champions matched Barcelona’s scoreline from Saturday by thumping Mallorca 5-0 away from home, helped by a brace apiece from Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain.

Real are eight points adrift of the league leaders after nine games but the Portuguese tactician sees no cause for concern.

“We were 10 points ahead of the second in March last season in March and we have always felt that the league is open,” Mourinho said.

“Today it’s not March; it is only October and November.

“There are not 10 points there are only eight, so we have to keep going and ignore our big rivals (Barcelona), and in this case two because Atletico Madrid also have an important advantage over us.

“But we have to continue and win as many points as possible, in this case it was important to win today, against a difficult opponent. The outcome seemed easy, but the game was made easy because of how well we played.

“Before the game it was one of those games you have in the calendar knowing it’s a tough game.”

Mourinho said his team was in good form and is confident Real can challenge Barca and joint leaders Atletico Madrid at the summit of the Spanish top division.

“I think we are in good form, even though we lost the last game in the Champions League,” he said.

“Ever since our league defeat to Sevilla, the team has been winning, we’re just not playing as great as last year. But we are playing well enough to win matches. Today we had the first chance and we took it.

“Things have been easier, we had an opportunity to score a goal today at the first opportunity, then came the second goal, and things were easier.”
