Mowbray a good appointment for Boro

Championship side Middlesbrough have appointed former-player Tony Mowbray as their new boss.

I predicted that Boro would do well this season but under Scot Gordon Strachan Boro struggled and are currently languishing in the Championship relegation zone.

Favourites

Boro have turned to former-Celtic boss Mowbray to save their season. They have a good squad of players and were most people’s favourites for the Championship title.

Their squad was strengthened significantly this summer and Mowbray will have a strong squad to start out with.

Experience

Mowbray has experience of this league having previously helped West Brom to promotion to the Premier League. In the next season his side were relegated but fans still backed their boss. Despite the fans backing he decided to join SPL giants Celtic. He lasted less than a year in Scotland.

What most fans at West Brom would say about their boss is that he tries to send out his teams to play football. Playing football got the Baggies into the Premier League maybe Mowbray will help Boro recover from their awful start.

Passion

The former-Boro start told Sky Sports: “There were a few issues to resolve,” “But since I was six or seven I have been a Middlesbrough fan, so when the opportunity arose – it didn’t take me a moment’s thought.

“This is a club I have been passionate about all my life and I have this opportunity to guide them back where they belong. Our ambition is to get the club moving back in the right direction.

He is a local lad who will be keen to impress in his home town. The fact that Boro are his home town club is likely to be even more of a motivation to him to succeed, if he needed extra motivation.

Career

He represented the club as a player for nearly a decade and made over 300 appearances for Boro. He helped the club from liquidation back to the top echelons of English football. During that time he was captain and became a club legend. His leadership skills were honed as a player and he has taken those skills into his managerial career.

Regarded

Despite being sacked by Celtic he is still highly-regarded in football coaching circles. He will see the Middlesbrough job as the ideal opportunity to prove that he is still capable of managing a big club. I think it’s a perfect fit for both the club and Mowbray himself.

Promotion

One of Mowbray’s first tasks is to get the North-East side away from the relegation zone and up the table. The 46 year-old is probably still thinking that the club have an outside chance of winning promotion this season.

He certainly has a strong squad which is capable of climbing up the table but it seems that confidence needs to be restored to the players and also the fans. The fans have voted with their feet in recent weeks and a return to form under Mowbray should restore some faith in their team and mean higher attendances at the Riverside Stadium.

Is Tony Mowbray the right man for Boro?
