Sunderland manager David Moyes is open to taking charge of Scotland but insists under-fire Gordon Strachan remains the best man for the job.

Strachan’s future is up in the air after Scotland collected just one point from their two World Cup qualifiers against Lithuania and Slovakia.

Scotland were fortunate to escape with a 1-1 draw against Lithuania, while they were swept aside by Slovakia 3-0 on Tuesday.

Moyes has kept a close eye on his native Scotland and he has backed Strachan to continue, despite their struggles.

“The first thing I’d say is that Gordon is doing as best he can with what is available,” said Moyes, whose cellar-dwelling Sunderland are attempting to claim their first Premier League win of the season against Stoke City on Saturday.

“Unfortunately, that’s what I think. Scotland is my country and I’ve supported them and followed them since a boy, but with what is available to Gordon it is very difficult for him to do much more.

“He’s trying to get the best out of them and Gordon, for me, is still the right man.

“I’d never say never to managing in Scotland in the future. It’s always something which I would definitely keep open.”
