Moyes bemoans wasted chances

Everton manager David Moyes felt his side were unlucky not to earn at least a point against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

In his last game in charge of Everton before his off-season move to Manchester United, Moyes saw his side spurn several chances to score as they were defeated 2-1.

Fernando Torres’ 76th-minute strike was all that separated the two sides after an end-to-end encounter as Everton – who would have notched a record Premier League points finish with victory – ended a terrific season on a slightly sour note.

Moyes praised his players though, for their attitude and performance, and felt they deserved more from the season-ending match, which saw Steven Naismith cancel out Juan Mata’s early opener.

“I thought it was a really good game. I thought we played excellent. I thought the result was very harsh on us,” Moyes said.

“In a game where there wasn’t a lot riding on it for us at Everton, I thought the attitude of the players, the performance levels, (it) was as good as we’ve had at times this season.

“And but for a few misses, we could have quite easily, at the worst, come away with a draw and (we) probably at least deserved that.”

Moyes congratulated his players for their superb season after the match and he believes that Everton’s new manager will inherit a team full of very capable Premier League players.

“Everton have had a great season. The players have had a great season,” he said.

“Near enough from the first day to the last, we’ve competed, we’ve been very close. We have had bad days but you tell me any club or any manager who is not going to have that during the season.

“It just doesn’t happen in a 10-month season. I’ve got to say congratulations. I did to them. I thought they’ve had a brilliant season.

“I think the group of players they have got are a top group of players. They’ve got a real chance. They’re good players.”
