Brisbane Roar coach Mike Mulvey wants his team’s 1-0 win over Perth to be the catalyst for a late-season surge towards the A-League finals.
Brisbane went into the game in ninth place on the back of three straight defeats, but now sit seventh just one point outside the top six.
Mulvey said he had been encouraged by the efforts on the training track and last week, but it was good to convert that into a result.
“I’ve been encouraged by the training performance and then you throw in the fact we’ve got a few suspensions and a few people out with injury and you throw a few new people into the mix I think it’s a very important win and I think it’s a deserved win,” Mulvey said.
“The key thing is we’ve drawn a line in the sand and we’ve decided we want to stand up for ourselves and we want to make something out of this season.
“You could see that in the players response, putting bodies on the line, people getting last-ditch tackles in and as much as Perth tried, and they’re in a desperate situation at the moment themselves, they couldn’t break through.”
Brisbane opened the scoring through James Meyer’s 30-yard strike and were able to defend doggedly throughout the second half to prevent the Glory drawing level.
“To walk away from here with three points is massive for us,” Mulvey said.
“It give us some buoyancy, it will lift the club and it will allow the players to build on that self-belief that they’ve been lacking for a good part of the season.
“What we want to see now is it’s not a one off, we want to go on and perform very well next week against the Mariners.”
Brisbane will face top-of-the-table Central Coast Mariners at home before a six-point swing game against fellow top-six hopefuls Sydney FC.
Mulvey said he expects Jade North to be available to face the Mariners, but not skipper Matthew Smith and Henrique is 50-50, while Besart Berisha will return from suspension.
“We’ll make an assessment when we get home,” Mulvey said.
“We’ve got players who are playing in the youth league tomorrow (Sunday) who are striving for a bit of fitness as well.”
