Former Romanian international Dorinel Munteanu was unveiled as the new coach of Steaua Bucharest on Monday, days after the resignation of Marius Lacatus.

Lacatus left following his side's 3-5 home loss to Lyon in the Champions League, with club owner Gigi Becali later telling press he had handed in his notice to avoid growing pressure on the players.

“I'm happy, Steaua is a challenge for me. I would like to speak less and let the facts speak for themselves,” Munteanu told a press conference.

“I hope I can work well with Gigi Becali and I'm already thinking of the first match against (league leaders) Dinamo Bucharest.”

Munteanu, 40, was capped 134 times for the national side, scoring 16 goals, and is Romania's most-capped player.

As well as playing for Dinamo and Steaua, Munteanu also spent four years at German first division side Wolfsburg and played for FC Cologne.

Steaua sit fourth in the Romanian league after a 1-1 draw against Gloria Buzau on Sunday.
