Steven Naismith scored on his return to Goodison Park as Norwich City knocked Premier League high-flyers Everton out of the EFL Cup on Tuesday.

Scotland international Naismith left Everton for Norwich in January, but was unable to keep the Canaries in the top flight and has struggled for playing time on their return to the Championship.

He was offered the chance to start by Alex Neil in the third-round tie and took his opportunity with the opening goal after 42 minutes, running on to Nelson Oliveira’s clever flick and finishing well past home goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg.

Everton pressed for an equaliser, but Ronald Koeman’s men were unable to find a way past Norwich goalkeeper John Ruddy and the visitors made sure of a place in round four with 16 minutes to go, Josh Murphy cutting in from the right before curling home a wonderful goal.

Defeat was Everton’s first under Koeman and they will look to get back to winning ways at Bournemouth on Saturday.
