Juventus have confirmed Andrea Pirlo has completed a move to New York City FC after his contract with the Serie A champions was terminated by mutual consent.

Italy midfielder Pirlo helped Juve to four consecutive Serie A titles following his move from Milan in 2011, including a league and cup double last season.

Pirlo was also part of the team that reached last term’s UEFA Champions League final, but will now join the likes of David Villa and Frank Lampard as the latest high-profile signing for New York City.

Juve hailed Pirlo – who attended City’s recent MLS derby with the New York Red Bulls – in a lengthy statement on their official website.

It concluded: “It has been an honour and a privilege to have shared these four fantastic seasons with Andrea and all associated with Juventus Football Club wish him the very best for the future.

“Thanks for everything, Maestro, and good luck.”

In a post on his official Twitter account, Pirlo wrote: “It can be difficult to transform emotions into words, especially if they involve 4 years so important in my life.

“Can I just say a huge thank you to all who have accompanied and supported me … thank you to all of you.

“It was not easy to decide, but it’s time to start a new adventure, but I will never forget the bond that I have with these colours.”

New York City subsequently confirmed Pirlo will be available from July 21.

Coach Jason Kreis said: “We have said from the outset that the right player for the third DP [designated player] slot was worth waiting for. Nobody could question that in Pirlo we are bringing one of the best in the world and one of the finest players to come to MLS.

“Like David Villa, his final game in Europe was the Champions League final, which demonstrates a player competing at the highest level of our sport.”

Pirlo added: “I had several opportunities to play outside of Italy, but I never had a doubt in picking New York for the enthusiasm of the people that come [to] watch the team.

“I have been wanting this experience for a long time and now that the opportunity materialised I wanted to take it. This is a club on the rise and shares my same hunger to achieve important results in the league. I am hoping to win.”
